Thru lanes for Maple Grove across Fairview, driver responsibilities while lights flash at a HAWK signal, Harrell Street and red curbs

| | Dear Road Wizard: Why does only one northbound lane go thru on Maple Grove Road at Fairview Avenue? I travel daily between 4:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. and wait two to four cycles before getting through -- as far back as the Ridenbaugh Canal. Half-way done reading War and Peace @ |
| | After W&P, you can turn to Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire... I only mention it because nothing is likely to change the two features that are your basic problem: First, Fairview Avenue is probably always going to have way more traffic during your driving time than Maple Grove. This means that synchronization programs are always going to aim at preventing gridlock on Fairview. Side streets like Maple Grove will get lower percentages of green time, despite their status as arterial streets. For Maple Grove, the program goal is to move one hour's worth of traffic clear of the intersection in one hour. At some intersections, by contrast, the goal is to clear all backup in one cycle. Second, Maple Grove north of Fairview to Ustick has one lane each way plus a center lane. This is the way it will be for a long, long time. Northbound from Fairview, Maple Grove has only one receiving lane, so it didn't make sense to send it two thru lanes. Your chances for slightly shorter waiting times, according to ACHD's programmer, will occur before 4:45 p.m. If you have a choice, tilt your trip early. |
