| | Dear Road Wizard: About the small yellow square marks that ACHD paints on detector loop corners for motorcyclists: will these be on the left or right wheel track? Many motorcyclists prefer being in the left half of the lane, so probably be in the left wheel track. Also, does the Highway 44/Highway 16 intersection have loops or video? K.T.@

| | ACHD used to mark loops only in the upper right corner, which put them in the right wheel track, but now ACHD marks both upper corners. "Upper" means the corners closest to the stop bar. Line up your machine with your front wheel nose to the mark. The metal in your machine will sit right over the wire. Detection at Highways 44 and 16 is done with loops. State highways belong to Idaho Transportation Department, but ACHD manages signals and detection. Email me again if you think they need yellow-square detector detectors. I asked the STAR Motorcycle Safety Program what they teach about lane use. They emphasize driving for conditions: avoid potholes, for example; see and be seen. One reason to use the left half of a travel lane is to discourage a passing vehicle from "sharing" your lane. If you travel in the right half, passers may use part of your lane and crowd you too close for safety or comfort.
