People can have say on future streets

Garden City – What kind of street do you want near your home? Should it get you to work and other places quickly using your car? Should it give you the chance to walk or bike at a leisurely pace along tree-lined boulevards? Something in between?

Designing the function and feel of future roads is the point of Livable Streets for Tomorrow, a joint effort of ACHD, Ada County and the cities. The goal is to balance the needs of all users – motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and people with disabilities – with streets that complement the surroundings.

At the open houses, members of the public will get the opportunity to see and comment on what’s planned for their streets – how many lanes and what features (landscaping, bike lanes, separated sidewalks, etc.) will be included.

ACHD, the cities and the county want feedback on the proposals – and whether people are willing to pay for the Livable Street concept. More street amenities will come at a cost: fewer, more expensive transportation projects or additional tax dollars spent for enhanced street sections.
